Local SEO for Roofing Contractors in Louisiana: The Playbook

This playbook is for the people who run a roofing company in Louisiana: the owner who bids the jobs and whoever answers the phone after a storm. It shows what homeowners type into Google, which Google Business Profile category to pick, the code that tells Google your site belongs to a roofer, and a checklist you can work through in a month. Do this first: claim your Google Business Profile, set the primary category to "Roofing Contractor", and set your service area to the parishes you actually drive to.

Market snapshot

The Census counted 267 roofing contractors in Louisiana in 2023 (NAICS code 238160, roofing contractors including skylight installers). That is 0.6 contractors for every 10,000 residents. Five years earlier there were 191, so the state added 76, a 40% jump, led by East Baton Rouge (23 to 42), Ascension (8 to 17) and St. Tammany (7 to 18).

One caution: the Census counts only businesses with payroll, so a one-crew sole proprietor is not in the 267, which is why every map pack below is fuller than the Census suggests.

Density, contractors per 10,000 residents, is the fairest way to compare metros. Where the Census withheld a 2018 figure for one of a metro's parishes (it publishes nothing for a parish with fewer than 3 contractors), the trend is a range. Alexandria's 2023 count is withheld outright, so it has no density or rank.

Search intent map

Intent is the reason behind a search, and it decides which page on your site should show up. Our national keyword file holds 638 keywords. Google's tool labels each as commercial (238), informational (212), transactional (133) or navigational (55). "Urgent" is our own split: commercial keywords from someone with water coming through the ceiling.

The biggest term in the file is "indeed", and the file is full of job searches, big-box retail, brand names, other states' cities and dictionary lookups. None are your customers, and about a third of what remains is metal panels and sealants, supply-store searches. The examples below are ones a Louisiana roofer can win.

Group What the searcher wants Example keywords (US monthly band) Page that should answer
Urgent A leak stopped this week, ideally today "roof repair near me" 5,000 plus; "roof leak repair near me" 5,000 plus; "small roof repair near me" 100 to 500; "flat roof leaks in heavy rain" 100 to 500; "how to replace roof shingles that blew off" 50 to 100; "emergency roofer {city}" no volume reported Roof repair page with the phone number at the top and a storm-damage section, plus accurate hours on your Google Business Profile
Service plus place A roofer in a specific city "roofer new orleans" 1,000 to 5,000; "roofing company new orleans" 1,000 to 5,000; "roofer baton rouge" 500 to 1,000; "roof repair baton rouge" 100 to 500; "metal roofing baton rouge" 100 to 500 Home page (one crew, one base) or the service-area page for that city
Comparison To pick the right one, not just any one "best roofing company near me" 5,000 plus; "local roofing contractors" 5,000 plus; "roofers near me with free estimates" 1,000 to 5,000; "reputable roofing contractors near me" 100 to 500; "bad roofing contractors near me" 100 to 500 Reviews page and about page with your license number and real crew, backed by your Google reviews
Cost A number before they call, and who pays it "roof replacement cost" 5,000 plus; "metal roof cost" 5,000 plus; "roof repair cost" 5,000 plus; "metal roof cost vs shingles" 5,000 plus; "how to get insurance to pay for roof replacement" 500 to 1,000; "how much does insurance pay for roof replacement" 100 to 500 A cost and insurance section on each service page, or one pricing and insurance-claims page
Informational To understand the job before it starts "pros and cons of a metal roof" 1,000 to 5,000; "how to replace a shingle roof" 1,000 to 5,000; "should i stay home during roof replacement" 100 to 500; "do i need a permit to replace my roof myself" 100 to 500; "metal roof vs shingles insurance" 100 to 500 Blog posts and an FAQ on the matching service page

Three things stand out. First, Google Ads returned no "emergency roofer" or "storm damage" terms at all. That is a gap in the tool, not in demand: in September 2021, the month after Hurricane Ida, "roof repair new orleans" jumped from 100 to 500 a month to 500 to 1,000 and "roofer new orleans" nearly tripled. Second, the cost group here is really a who-pays group, so the insurance-claim questions belong on your site. Third, "roof repair" peaks nationally from March to May and again in September; in Louisiana the September peak is the hurricane peak.

Keyword patterns with volume ranges

Google Ads reports search volume for the whole United States, not for a city. So the "metro volume" for a pattern is the US monthly volume of the city-modified keyword, for example "roofer new orleans". For Lafayette, Monroe, Alexandria and Hammond, which share names with cities in other states, we use the "la" form ("roofer monroe la"). Google lumps word-order variants together, and in Baton Rouge and Lafayette it appears to lump "roofer" and "roofing company" too, so each concept appears once and is never added up.

Volumes are shown as bands; "no volume reported" means Google returned no figure at all, which happened for every "emergency" term, nearly every "cost {city}" term, and for "roofer {city}" in four metros, where Google mostly reports "roofing company {city}" instead.

The head term carries almost all of the city-specific demand, and New Orleans carries far more than its Census count predicts. Everything else with a city name sits in the tens or low hundreds, but still earns a page. The "near me" patterns are far larger, but Google decides them from the searcher's location and your service area, so a complete listing wins them. Generate the full list for your city with the keyword pattern tool.

What the local pack looks like

The local pack is the map with three businesses that Google shows above the normal results. We pulled the top 20 Google Maps results for "roofer" in all 10 metros. Houma returned only 9 results and Hammond 12, so their figures are out of 8 and 11 real competitors, not 20, and less reliable. Real competitors are listings whose primary category is Roofing Contractor, Roofing Service, Roof Repair or Metal Roofing, or Gutter Service with roofing among the other categories; all 163 turned out to be Roofing Contractor. We excluded 18 off-category rows, mostly supply stores and other building trades.

Across the 163, 147 are claimed, 132 have a website, the median listing has 30 reviews and the median rating is 4.9 stars. Only 39 have more than 100 reviews.

Medians exclude the six listings with no reviews yet. Source: Google Maps results for "roofer", September 2026.

Lafayette and Shreveport are the hard packs (medians of 92 and 82.5); New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the two biggest markets, are open at 15 and 11. Lake Charles is the least polished, with 11 of 19 lacking a website.

Google Business Profile categories

Your Google Business Profile (the free listing that powers the map) needs one primary category and can have up to nine secondary ones. The primary category is the strongest single ranking signal you control.

Primary: Roofing Contractor. Nationally, 263,307 listings use it, against 36,338 for Roofing Supply Store and 35,101 for Waterproofing Company. In our Louisiana sample all 163 real competitors use it as primary. Our pack rule in section 6 also counts Roof Repair and Metal Roofing as primaries, but Google's national category counts hold neither and no listing in our sample used one, so a metal roofing specialist still picks Roofing Contractor and lists metal roofing, storm repair and insurance claims as services.

Secondary picks, in this order, only where the company truly offers the service:

  1. Siding Contractor (the most common secondary in our sample, 22 of 163).
  2. Gutter Service (on 12 of 163; six of Slidell's top 20 carry it).
  3. Waterproofing Company (35,101 nationally; a waterproofing category on 4 of 163) if you do flat and commercial roofs.
  4. Skylight Contractor (3 in our sample); the Census counts skylights in this trade.

General Contractor appears on 17 of 163 listings; add it only if you hold that license, and never as primary.

Do not use: Roofing Supply Store (36,338; three Louisiana listings with it as primary were excluded as non-competitors), Building Materials Supplier, Metal Fabricator, Auto Sunroof Shop (2,427, a car category), Fire Proofing Contractor (405), and Insulation Contractor or Contractor as a primary. Google may show your listing for the wrong searches or flag it.

Schema templates

Schema is code on your website that tells Google what kind of business the page describes. The correct schema.org type for a roofer is RoofingContractor, which sits under HomeAndConstructionBusiness and LocalBusiness, so it inherits address, hours, phone and reviews. Generate yours with the schema tool.

Block 1, the site graph, links the business, logo, website, page and FAQ by @id, plus areaServed because you travel to the customer; it goes on every page with the WebPage entity swapped for that page. Block 2, a Service block naming the business as provider, goes on each service page, starting with roof repair.

Three fields matter most. Name, address and phone must match your Google Business Profile character for character; if you hide your address on Google, drop streetAddress and keep city and postal code. areaServed should list the parishes and towns you set as your service area on Google, no wider. openingHoursSpecification must match your listing.

Website structure

A roofing site does not need to be big. It needs one page for each thing a homeowner searches for, with a title that says what the page is and where. The title tag is the text Google shows as the blue link.

One page per core service. Start with roof repair, roof replacement, metal roofing, storm and hurricane damage, and gutters or commercial roofing if you sell them. Title pattern: "Roof Repair in Slidell, LA | Northshore Ridgeline Roofing". Each service page carries a short cost and insurance section, because most competitors do not. Put the phone number at the top of the roof repair page; urgent searchers do not read down.

A service-area page instead of location pages. Most roofers have no storefront, so one page lists every parish and town you serve. Title pattern: "Roofing Contractor Serving St. Tammany Parish | Northshore Ridgeline Roofing". This is the page that should rank for "roofer {city}".

An insurance-claims page. Louisiana homeowners search "how to get insurance to pay for roof replacement". Explain how you document damage, how the adjuster visit works and what the deductible means. Title: "Roof Insurance Claims in Louisiana | Northshore Ridgeline Roofing".

An about page with your license and real crew. Comparison searchers want a state contractor license number, years in business and faces. Title: "About Our Crew | Northshore Ridgeline Roofing".

A reviews page. Show your Google reviews, add before-and-after job photos, and link to the listing so the next review lands there.

A short blog or FAQ. Ten posts answering the informational keywords ("pros and cons of a metal roof") reach people a year before they buy.

Step-by-step checklist

Google Business Profile

  1. Claim and verify the listing at business.google.com (16 of 163 sampled competitors are unclaimed).
  2. Set the primary category to "Roofing Contractor" and add two to four secondaries from section 7.
  3. Set your service area to the parishes you work in and hide the street address if you work from home.
  4. Enter hours exactly as the office runs them; do not claim 24 hours you do not staff.
  5. Add at least 10 real photos: finished roofs, a crew on a job, trucks with signage.
  6. List every named service from your site with a price range where you have one.
  7. Post an update after every major storm naming the parishes you are taking calls in.

Website basics

  1. Put name, address (or city and zip), phone and license number in every footer, matching Google exactly.
  2. Make the phone number a tap-to-call link on mobile.
  3. Set a title tag on every page using the patterns in section 9.
  4. Add the RoofingContractor schema block with areaServed to the home page.

FAQ

What GBP category should a roofing contractor use?

Use "Roofing Contractor" as the primary category. It is on 263,307 listings nationally and on all 163 real competitors in the 10 Louisiana map packs we sampled. Add "Siding Contractor", "Gutter Service" or "Waterproofing Company" as secondaries where they apply.

Which Louisiana metro has the most roofing contractors?

Baton Rouge, with 71 roofing contractors in the 2023 Census count, followed by New Orleans (51) and Shreveport (29). Per resident, Baton Rouge and Hammond tie at 0.8 per 10,000; Houma is the least crowded at 0.2. Statewide there are 267 contractors with payroll, up 40% since 2018.

How many keywords should a roofing contractor target?

Fewer than you think. One head term per metro ("roofer {city}", 1,000 to 5,000 searches a month in New Orleans, 500 to 1,000 in Baton Rouge, 100 to 500 in Lafayette and Monroe, 50 to 100 in Alexandria and Hammond, and no volume reported in the other four), one term per service page ("roof repair {city}"), and the cost and insurance questions as blog posts. For a one-crew company that is 15 to 25 keywords, not hundreds.

Does a roofing contractor need schema?

It is not required to rank, but it is cheap and removes doubt. The RoofingContractor type gives Google your name, phone, hours and service area in a form it reads directly, and the schema tool on this site generates it in a minute. It cannot fix hours that disagree with your listing, so match those first.
